talks continue on capitol hill to avoid the fiscal cliff. but where is it all going? house speaker john boehner went to the floor and spoke about his meeting with president obama for the first time. boehner and the president sat down over the weekend. boehner says the meeting was nice and cordial but went on to attack the president's offer on spending cuts. >> we're still waiting for the white house to identify what spending cuts the president is willing to make as part of the balanced approach that he promised the american people. the longer the white house slow walks this process, the closer our economy gets to the fiscal cliff. right now the american people have to be scratching their heads and wondering when is the president going to get serious? >> boehner and his far right caucus may find the offer unacceptable, but president obama has put a lot on the table. nancy pelosi hit back at boehner's rhetoric today. >> the fact is, the president has and democrats agree, to $1.6 trillion cuts. where are the cuts? in bills that you, mr. speaker, have voted for. >> pelosi

fiscal cliff negotiations, don't you think they would proceed a lot faster and smoother if both sides were really dealing with reality? but, you see, the republicans, they simply are not. house speaker john boehner and senate minority leader mitch mcconnell have spent years catering to the base that believes, let's say, president obama's a socialist, and the united nations wants to take your disabled child right out of your home. they have votes to back it up, folks. this pitiful display of most senate republicans on the disability treaty showed once again just how far they are, and how far they are removed from reality. one democratic senator told me yesterday his office was actually getting calls from constituents with disabled children wanting to know if the u.n. would remove their children from their homes. it is manufacturing fear in the lives of americans. sometimes it's just a bald-faced lie about the facts. here's the democratic and republican opening bids on the fiscal cliff. but the revenue side of the republican proposal just doesn't match up with reality. you can't get $80

when it comes to the fiscal cliff that is threatening our economy and threatening jobs, the white house has wasted another week. >> the house speaker had nothing of substance to say about this week's phone conversation with the president. >> the phone call was pleasant, but was just more of the same. the conversations that the staff had yesterday, just more of the same. it's time for the president if he's serious to come back to us with a counteroffer. >> boehner says the president is not being a helpful negotiator, even though the president apparently designed the negotiating sessions at boehner's request. according to "the new york times," boehner insisted the talks include only himself and the president of the united states. boehner wanted senate democrats and nancy pelosi out of the discussions. democratic senator dick durbin told the times this is now the speaker and the president working this through. democratic leaders say they are satisfied with the briefings that they continue to receive. nancy pelosi seems perfectly happy putting pressure on the republicans. >> why are we not
